The Doña Ana Arts Council’s 41st Annual Renaissance ArtsFaire, featuring over 150 artists’ booths, is now accepting artist vendor applications. This Faire is recognized as one of the finest of its kind in the Southwest. The event is widely promoted throughout the region in print, radio, television and direct mailings. Attendance is 25,000 to 30,000 visitors each year. Held at Young Park, the lake, towering trees and rolling lawns provide an idyllic setting for the Faire. Unique costumed entertainers, medieval decorations and special food booths add to the Renaissance atmosphere.

The Renaissance ArtsFaire is the largest juried arts show in Southern New Mexico. Jurors select participants exhibiting only the highest quality arts and crafts. Artist categories include ceramics, painting, textiles, drawing/prints, photography, toys, glass, jewelry, sculpture, wood, leather, musical instruments, and an “other” category for items such as paper, candles, soaps, and oils. Artists’ booths are supported by performances of music, dance, theater and a variety of food booths, all presented in a Renaissance theme.

The Dona Ana Arts Council is a non-profit organization working to improve the quality of life in Las Cruces, Dona Ana County, and Southern New Mexico by ensuring that the performing, visual and literary arts are an integral part of education, economic growth and community development. The Renaissance ArtsFaire is the Art Council’s major fundraising event. All income generated by gate admissions, booth fees and Pepsi sales goes to support arts in education and other council programs throughout the year.

For more information call the Doña Ana Arts Council at (575) 523-6403 or via email at infodaac@daarts.org. Click HERE to apply online. The deadline for us to receive your completed Renaissance ArtsFaire artist application is July 13, 2012. We hope you will join us for this special celebration of the arts.

April 2, 2012 – Driftwood Productions will hold auditions for the musical comedy NUNSET BOULEVARD, by Dan Goggin, on Sunday and Monday, April 15 & 16, from 7 – 9pm. Auditions will be held on stage at the Rio Grande Theatre. Actors will do cold reads from the script and must come prepared to sing one song, but must provide either a CD or a musical accompanist or must sing a-cappella. Prepared monologues will not be needed. The production has five female roles, ages 17 and up. The show is being co-directed by Artistic Director Kathleen Murphy and Oscar Perez. Please bring a performance resume and a photo, if available.

Rehearsals begin April 17th with a schedule running Mondays thru Fridays from 7pm to 9pm, according to actor’s schedules. Tech week may require later hours and an occasional Saturday or Sunday rehearsal may be called for if needed. Performances will run June 8 – 17, Friday – Sunday, with option to extend June 22 – 24. For further information, contact Oscar Perez at 575-312-2339 or Kathleen Murphy at 575-571-3387.

Synopsis: In the seventh installment of the Nunsense series, The Little Sisters of Hoboken have been invited to sing at the famed Hollywood Bowl. They are thrilled at the prospect until they arrive and realize that they were instead booked to perform at the Hollywood Bowl-A-Rama, a bowling alley with a cabaret lounge. When they hear that auditions are being held for a movie musical, “NUNSET BOULEVARD,” they recognize that landing a part in it would be a natural, although this also forces them to contemplate their true calling. The show is structured in the tried and true variety format, but as always, things go awry. The Sisters have to contend with announcements from the bowling alley public address system as well as the activity on the lanes, which is occasionally heard but not seen.

The Rio Grande Theatre is located at 211 N. Downtown Mall, in Las Cruces. For more information visit www.RioGrandeTheatre.com or call (575) 523-6403.

March 16, 2012 – In a move that is sure to get the theatre world buzzing, the Dona Ana Arts Council has added community theatre to its regular roster of programming within the Rio Grande Theatre, with the adoption of Driftwood Productions, under the direction of local theatre veteran Kathleen Murphy. The troupe was formed in an effort to preserve the theatre traditions and principles of Art W. Haggerton, a well-respected long-time theatre director and producer, who passed away on October 3, 2011. Among the troupe’s goals is to give new and aspiring talented youth an arena to hone their craft and learn the disciplines of theatre production, while also providing outstanding musical theatre to the audiences of Las Cruces, New Mexico, which fits in beautifully with the on-going mission of both the Arts Council and the management of the Rio Grande Theatre. Plans are currently under way to present the troupe’s first production in their new home during the Summer of this year.

“Being in Art Haggerton’s shows were choice experiences that enriched my life immeasurably,” says Murphy, who is currently wowing audiences in the title role of the No Strings Theatre production “Becky’s New Car” at the Black Box Theatre in downtown Las Cruces. “When Art died, a huge part of my heart and soul died, too…for a while. But then I began to remember all of the things he taught me. And I thought about all the young people who spoke at his memorial of Art’s ability to bring out a talent, a confidence or an ability that they didn’t even know they had. He did that for me, too. We produced some of the most successful musicals in Las Cruces and it was done with a sense of partnership and friendship. I want to do all I can to continue his efforts in producing high quality musical theatre and in developing young talent and providing a safe and encouraging place for performers to grow and learn. It is a way for all of us who loved Art to keep him alive. I can feel him watching over me, over us and our efforts.”

Bringing Driftwood Productions to the Rio Grande Theatre was the realization of a dream for many. “It was really just a matter of time,” says Rio Grande Theatre manager David Salcido. “My own background is heavily rooted in theatre. It was something I felt very strongly about, but I knew that I just had to wait until the right moment. That moment came when Kathleen walked into my office and outlined her plans to carry on Art Haggerton’s dream. All she needed was a home to do it. After a long talk in which we both became more and more excited by the prospects, I was more than happy to help her realize that dream. I look forward to finally having a theatre troupe walking the boards of the Rio Grande Theatre on a regular basis.”

The Rio Grande Theatre is located at 211 N. Downtown Mall, in Las Cruces. For more information visit www.RioGrandeTheatre.com or call (575) 523-6403.

Las Cruces experienced its second Arts Fair recently. On behalf of the Doña Ana Arts Council’s Las Cruces Arts Fair Committee, I want to offer hearty thanks to all who participated in making the show a success. Thank you to more than 80 volunteers who made the participating artists appreciate the Las Cruces art market. Thank you underwriters and sponsors of the Arts Fair for financial and in-kind support. The jury that reviewed all the applications also deserves our appreciation.Despite the high winds and blowing dust last Sunday, the Arts Fair was a success. How do we measure success? Nearly 200 artists applied to be juried into the show. Based on the jury’s recommendations, 80 artists participated in the show. Artists from the West Coast joined those from New Mexico, Kansas, Ohio and surrounding states to show and sell their art work. Artists participating in last year’s show talked to their colleagues and promoted the Arts Fair and the Convention Center.

The Arts Fair’s success can be measured by the businesses and individuals who supported the show. Several Las Cruces businesses saw the potential of collaborating with the Doña Ana Arts Council to market and promote themselves and the Arts Fair. Notably, the Sun-News was the Arts Fair’s major underwriter. Sitel, The Bulletin, Meson de Mesilla, and ‘N Compass Group were standout sponsors. KRWG-FM and TV provided outstanding marketing support also.

Was the Arts Fair a big deal for Las Cruces? I’d argue yes. I wholeheartedly second Glenn Cutter’s perspective. The Cutter Gallery co-owner said, “Las Cruces has an untapped potential as a strong market for fine art. A vibrant arts community will help attract people and businesses to the area. The Las Cruces Arts Fair is helping establish our reputation as an important venue for visual arts in the Southwest.”

The Doña Ana Arts Council and the Rio Grande Theatre clearly deserve the Arts Fair’s fundraising effort. There is more to the Las Cruces Arts Fair story and meaning.

Think business growth and development. Think a developing community self-image that speaks to the quality of life in the Mesilla Valley. Consider how a vibrant arts and cultural life can attract businesses and their employees to Las Cruces.

An expanding community image linking art and cultural events to existing and new businesses cannot be overlooked as a community benefit either. Las Crucens should embrace the Arts Fair as an event that makes us all proud of what our city can offer.

The Arts Fair also benefitted the Las Cruces business community. For the last several years Las Cruces has been marketed to businesses and retirees as an ideal relocation city. But attracting and keeping businesses and new residents is more than the simple matter of that enigmatic line from “Field of Dreams,” the baseball fantasy-drama movie. “If you build it, he will come” is an attractive lure — but real life requires more.

For more than 40 years the Doña Ana Arts Council has served as a vital arts and cultural organization for Las Cruces and the region. The historic Rio Grande Theatre, a city-owned property that the Arts Council operates for the city under a memorandum of agreement, is often referred to as the “crown jewel” of downtown. With the re-opening of Main Street and the prospect that downtown redevelopment will continue to gain advocates and businesses that appreciate the opportunities that a downtown location offers, arts and culture-related businesses can play a significant role.

Business opportunities have ripple effects also. Consider. The Las Cruces Arts Fair was marketed to El Paso, Juarez, and all of southern New Mexico. Southern New Mexico and El Paso share the same media market. Broader business marketing plans, even in a down economy, will have positive results for enterprises with a vision and desire to expand their reach.

Here’s a question that turns off of the Las Cruces Arts Fair’s success. Where can better collaboration between the arts and cultural community and the larger business community go? Shouldn’t we all care?

George Griffin, a member-at-large on the Doña Ana Arts Council’s board, chairs the Arts Council’s Las Cruces Arts Fair Committee.

The Doña Ana Arts Council proudly presents the winners of the Second Annual Color Las Cruces Plein Air Competition and Community Arts Festival, held over the weekend of September 9 – 11, 2011. On Friday, September 9th, over 30 artists from throughout the Southwest gathered up their paints and easels and set out to capture the subtle beauties of Las Cruces in a timed painting competition. The resulting paintings were exhibited throughout the weekend at 201 N. Main Street, where guest judge Preston Thayer, the Director of the NMSU Art Galleries, did the honors.

The winners of the 2011 Color Las Cruces Plein Air Competition were: Meg Freyermuth – First Place; Beth Ray – Second Place; Judy Licht – Third Place. Honorable Mentions went to Arlene J. Tugel and Ouida Touchon. An interesting fact about this competition is that First Place Winner Meg Freyermuth was last year’s Second Place winner, while this year’s Second Place winner was last year’s First Place winner.

Winners of the Quickdraw competition, held Sunday, September 11th, were: Krystyna Robbins – First Place; Beth Ray – Second Place; Lois Griffel – Third Place. In the 15-and-Under category, the winners were: Reyna Andazola – First Place; Santana Andazola – Second Place; Alyssa Garnett – Honorable Mention.

Images of the winning paintings can be seen in the Color Las Cruces Gallery.

The Arts Council would like to congratulate all of the winners and give a big thank you to the artists and sponsors who participated, as well as the many volunteers who gave their time and energy to make this year’s event a special one.
