2011 ANNUAL COLOR LAS CRUCES PLEIN AIR COMPETITION AND COMMUNITY ARTS FESTIVAL

OVERVIEW
Plein Air painters, we invite you to Southern New Mexico to be inspired by our delightful street scenes, distinctive architecture, charming farmers market and for those who want to paint the wild and rugged, we offer the Organ Mountains. Come and paint in Las Cruces where color and light reign supreme. The event will be highlighted by a Plein Air Competition, a three day plein air workshop presented by noted artist David Schwindt, and an awards celebration followed by an evening under the stars with wine and food. The event will culminate with a Quickdraw and an exhibition of the art created during the event.
ELIGIBILITY Open to all artists 18 years and older with no geographic limit.
This is a juried show. Artists must submit images of their work to qualify.
SPECIFICATIONS Work will be created on local sites with your canvas (support of choice) which will be stamped at the registration desk on Friday morning. There is no size limit and you may do more than one painting but you can only submit one painting to be judged. NO frames or mats.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 9th
7:00am – 8:00am Registration at the Rio Grande
1:30pm - 2:30pm Finished paintings returned to theatre
5:00pm – 8:00pm Reception/CAP fundraiser at Cutter Gallery.
Refreshments and beverages served.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 10TH
10:00am Closed judging to be done in the gallery by Preston Thayer.
5:30pm – 6:00pm Private showing of finished paintings. Open to sponsors with first option to buy.
6:00pm – 8:00pm Reception for the artists outside in front of the Rio GrandeTheatre.
6:00pm Unveiling of “mug creation”.
7:00pm Awards presented.
H’ors doeuvres and wine served during reception.
Music by the Las Cruces High School Chamber Orchestra
Artists are free to enjoy Las Cruces for the day. Perhaps do another painting, visit the Farmers Market, the Bosque de Mesilla, or hike in the many wilderness areas.

Camino Del Arte Gallery Walk in the Mesquite District will feature artist demonstrations by Plein Air Artists. Please look for the Color Las Cruces information table.
11:00pm-3:00pm Camino Del Arte Gallery Walk
During the day students from NMSU will be constructing a sculpture in the downtown area. The sculpture will be made entirely from collected coffee mugs. Public is encouraged to watch the on-going work and bring unwanted mugs to contribute to the piece. Mugs will be accepted until 12:00 noon at the Rio Grande Theatre.

SUNDAY, SEPT 11TH
10:30am -12:00pm Quick Draw Competition. ($10.00 fee) Public invited and encouraged to participate.
12:00pm Awards for Quick Draw presented
12:00pm – 2:30pm Gallery will be open to the public with the artists available for discussion. Artists involved with the Plein Air Competition may bring one other painting to sell.

Rules & Regulations:
- Submit an online, completed application, three images representative of your best work, and non-refundable entry fee of $40.00 by August 19, 2011. If accepted, artist agrees to be present at registration from 7-8am on Friday, September9th to receive instructions, maps, and authentication.
- Artist agrees to create a work in the field (no studio work), on your own medium that is stamped by The Arts Council and authenticated prior to the start of painting.
- Artist agrees to paint at local location of their choice. Artist will leave registration area at 8am and deliver completed work between 1:30pm – 2:30pm.
- Artist agrees to be present and display their painting for sale in an exhibit space on Sunday from noon-2:30pm. All pieces not sold by 2:30pm on Sunday will be available for pick-up by artist.
- Artists are responsible for their own supplies, transportation, meals, and lodging.
- Online entry: Go to www.las-cruces-arts.org. Complete the entry form, upload three (3) images, submit and make your payment online through PayPal, or print out the form and mail it to be received in the Arts Council office by August 19, along with your $40 payment (checks payable to DAAC) to Dona Ana Arts Council, Attn: Color Las Cruces, P.O. Box 1721, Las Cruces, NM 88004. Please be sure to provide us with your e-mail address for notification.
- Entry fee includes your participation, an artist apron identifying you as a featured artist, a Sponsor gift bag, VIP Artists Reception, and an opportunity to show your piece plus a second piece for sale in a gallery space (gallery commission – 40%) on Sunday afternoon 12-2:30pm.
- Paid entries must be received in the DAAC office no later than August 19th. Accepted artists will receive an e-mail acceptance notice along with event details and hotel packages for non-local entrants by August 26th. Artists not juried into the competition will also be notified via e-mail by August 26th.
DONA ANA ARTS COUNCIL STATEMENT
Funds raised from “Color Las Cruces” support our Career Arts Path (CAP) program for middle school children. CAP is a two-week intensive art-based camp that explores possible careers in creative fields and allows students to experiment with different mediums.
